Who Moved my Cheese? was published in 1998. The world was in a Y2K frenzy. Information Technology firms were manically working on fixing bad code that could destroy the world. Destroy it, I say! I remember all kinds of doom was predicted. Some said Air Traffic Control could go offline stranding all the planes in the air. There could be massive power cuts, plunging the world in darkness. Or a bunch of accidents if the traffic lights stopped working. The ‘what if’ scenarios were all worst case, and they were applied to almost every area of modern life.
Who Moved my Cheese was written in such volatile times, and it sold millions of copies and was translated into several languages. Although it is a business book, it is written in the form of an allegory or story, and talks about change in work and life.
There are two mice Sniff and Scurry and two little people Hem and Haw who live in a crazy world, just like you and me. They look for cheese, something they need in order to be happy and successful. The men and mice come upon a lot of cheese. The men consume cheese regularly until one day, they run out. The mice realize this and immediately go on a hunt to find some more cheese. The men are late in finding out that there is no cheese, and they think the mice took it away. They come back the next day, and find there is still no cheese.
This happens again and again and the men start blaming each other. Meanwhile, the mice have discovered a new supply.

There are many popular books that talk about change – how it is inevitable and how to accept it. Perhaps none explain it in a format you will always remember. Like some of the other books I have mentioned, this book has permanent place on your bookshelf. Trust me, there will be many occasions in both your personal and professional life when you will have to consult Sniff and Scurry, or Hem and Haw.
It’s the writing on the wall that shows you why you should sense the writing on the wall. And act on it!
