The bright sun rays peeping through the crack in the curtain woke me up. I rubbed my eyes, blinked a few times and gazed at the clock on the opposite wall. 9.00 AM. What day is it? Aah, it’s Sunday. No rush. And the baby, it slept through, now that’s new. This is going to be a wonderful day! The new Pampers baby-dry pants are definitely a cut above the rest – the magic gel is really magical. And for a change, the promises made by the store clerk turned out to be true too.
I didn’t dare disturb Raji, it would give me some time to get the coffee started and if I am lucky, go through the newspaper. I walked to the guest room, where I had made Dee sleep last night. It was too late to let her leave alone and we were just too tired to accompany her home.
Uhh . . . there it is, she is up. I ran back to the crib, picked her up in my arms and walked back to Dee. “Take her. She is dry inside-out, so I don’t have to dive in immediately and you don’t have to wake up to an aroma therapy. I will tell you a secret and you will get your morning workout. Seat her on your knees and jerk them every once in a while. She loves to swing. And here is her favorite toy. That should keep her happy.” I explained.
Dee looked at me with a blank, listless expression and took Raji in her arms. Not the one to challenge how the baby science works, Dee obediently sat Raji on her knees and began to gently rock the baby. But it was not long before there were hints of wail in the making. She immediately thrust the toy and the wail subsided. But a smile was still elusive.
“She is quite, but not jumping yet. Didn’e she have a good night sleep?” asked Dee.
“Oh, you want Raji jumping? Hunh.” I grabbed my phone and began playing Raji’s favorite song. It was amazing how she reacted to the music every time, without fail. Dee got a full display of raji at her happiest. Raji began to wave her arms and it was suddenly difficult to keep her seated as she squirmed and tried to move all that she could to the peppy tune.
“This is fun. When did you discover this? I have never seen her this animated.” Exclaimed Dee.
“Well . . . It is working, for now. But you know how it is with babies. Today it is the music. Tomorrow, it will be a bird chirping or a butterfly in the park. So I will enjoy it while I can.” It is not that you get it this easy all the time – just put on a tune and she stops crying!, thought Mayuri.
