If you are observant enough, nonverbal communication can help you understand people much better than having a one-to-one ‘honest’ chat with them. Because according to Joe Navarro, people can twist words quite easily to say things that they don’t really mean. However, the body doesn’t always follow the frontal cortex and relies more on the limbic system.

Joe Navarro was an FBI counterintelligence special agent for 25 years and supervised the nonverbal communications at FBI. He as Ph.D. in Psychology from Princeton University and has authored more than 23 books. In What Every Body Is Saying, the author explains the basic brain anatomy and discusses the divisions in human brain that affect our nonverbal communication.

We all know that everyone has a tell or some peculiar physical response to an uncomfortable or stressful situation. Some people will nervously tap their fingers, some tap their feet. Joe Navarro in this book takes your knowledge of body language a notch up by discussing different body movements and what these repetitive movements mean.

What Every Body Is Saying is a quick and easy read as the author begins explaining the science behind body language and why body language is more reliable than what people say. Without too much of a technical discussion the author straightaway jumps into the core and discusses these nonverbal communication cues. He clearly directs your attention to specific behaviors, which are clearly illustrated and supplemented by examples he has come across during his FBI career.

The different nonverbal communication signs are organized according to human anatomy as the author walks you through facial gestures, hand movement, position of the feet, body postures and other similar body movements. What Every Body Is Saying is a quick and easy read, and the author promises that if your read it a few times, spotting these nonverbal cues will become a habit and help you in your everyday conversations with people with your family and also help you communicate confidently in your workplace.
