Deepak Chopra, the New York based physician and spiritual guru, needs no introduction. I have had a tattered copy of Creating Affluence for the longest time. I have heard family members talk about it for years now, and know the gist of the book. But I had never actually picked it up and read it.
The first question I had about the book was what the author meant by ‘affluence’. Was he referring to hard cash – bank balance – or did he mean affluence in the larger philosophical sense? People who don’t like to read will be happy to know that the book is pretty small, and can literally fit into the back pocket of your jeans. The author asks the reader to read through the book once rapidly, and then continue revisiting various sections throughout their lives. Wealth and success are sure to follow.
Creating Affluence starts with a small story about a young man who asks a spiritual master for the secret to achieving wealth. The story about Goddess Saraswati and Laksmi given here is one I know well. In Hindu mythology, Saraswati is the Goddess of Knowledge and Lakshmi is the Goddess of Wealth. Lakshmi is jealous of Saraswati and follows her everywhere. So the more a person seeks Knowledge, the more Wealth will follow. This is a tale that is perhaps repeated in many Indian households in different forms. I remember my grandma and my mom telling us this a hundred times, especially when we wanted to ditch the homework to go out and play.

Chapter 1, The Source of All Abundance, explains that every material thing is ultimately made up of energy. Even the thoughts that we articulate in a certain language are made up of impulses of energy and information. In The A-to-Z Steps to Creating Affluence, the author lists the various energy states that will create wealth in life. By repeating these principles, one can spontaneously experience results, but over a period of time. In Chapter 3, The Magic of Attention, the author states that affluence means much more than material wealth. Affluence is a totally carefree existence. The author plunges into quantum theory to explain that a particle comes into being only when we try to look for it.
