Bonding Over Food

Love comes in various shades and shapes. No matter what its color, it is a bond that stays strong through all the life’s ups and downs. However, we quite easily, can ignore this invisible source of strength that stands with us as our family and friends and fail to express gratitude toward people who are closest to us.

Although there is no reason why you cannot express love toward others on any other day, Valentine’s Day gives us an excuse and reminds us to do take time out and express our feelings and to appreciate our loved ones. So here’s my expression of love for my sister and dearest friend, Pragati.

Dear Sis,

Life has been amazing with some sweet moments, some sour, and some downright bitter. You have had my back all through these and taught me to think boldly. This pithy note cannot express what I feel, but I cannot think of a grander public gesture to acknowledge your love and support.

I know you have a sweet tooth – that is currently hurting – and love cupcakes. So here is a small lunchbox of cupcakes to show my love and gratitude for your support, and numerous amazing meals.

– Your pesky brother

lunch

Food has always been central to our family bonding. Everyone chips in and everyone has a role to play in preparing for the grand meal. Grand meals apart, a lunch box is the daily savior in our lives. A lunch box is much more than a meal, it is that connection with home, a short respite in our daily hectic life that reinvigorates us in the middle of the day. It is that familiar smell and taste that reminds us of our loved ones and creates an oasis for a short time.

I have lived alone for many years, and have had a more balanced Indian meal with all the veggies, daals more consistently during that time than at home. However, this balanced food has never had the same result as that of the home cooked food. I believe love is the secret ingredient that no outsider can whip up. No wonder people enlist services of scores of Dabbawallahs in Mumbai to get homecooked food instead of getting it from a hotel or mess close by.

I know telephones are now everywhere, but a surprise note every now and then tucked in your lunch box telling you not to forget that candy in the lunchbox can add an extra something. I am hoping to see this amazing dialogue in The Lunchbox Premiere on &Pictures at 8 P.M on Valentine’s day.
