China Wakes Up

December 2013 and the early months of 2014 saw some of the worst pollution effects in the two leading Asian economies. Pollution in Beijing has reached to alarming levels. So much so that the wealthy are looking to leave the country for countries that are more sensitive to environmental concerns. This article looks at environmental problems that fast development created for the Chinese population.

The Cheap Fuel Trap

The rising fuel subsidies have brought Ukraine to default on the IMF loan, but it refuses to cut the subsidies on petroleum products. The author points out that most of the benefits of these subsidies go to the rich and divert the investment that can go into development programs for the poor.
