The 5 Second Rule Book
How long does it take to change and make things happen. This Mel Robbins book tells you that the real change depends on micro moments. Those few moments after an idea pops in your head where your brain dwells on whether to act on the thought. The problem is, more often than not, if you wait, the action never happens and the idea and thought is lost.
It is like that idea for an article or recipe that pops in your head when you are watching a movie, reading a book, or witness something on the street. If you do not write down that idea then and there, it is lost. The author stresses that the difference between seeing a business idea come to fruition or starting a new diet is in the few moments when you weigh and agonize. The more you wait, the more doubts, ifs and buts creep in, and you eventually kill the idea and put into not feasible box.
The author digs into neuroscience and shows you why and how those initial moments are crucial. The reasons for lingering over an instinct to act and then failing to act at all can be many. But mostly it is because of habit. So the next time you think that you should go for a run every morning, the author asks you to focus on the thought and get up an do a physical activity – take a small walk.
When you push yourself to do something you don’t feel like doing, it rewires you brain to act. So the next time, early in the morning, when the thought of going for a run hits you, you are more likely to put on those shoes and ‘Just Do it’.
The author outlines the five elements of the 5 Second rule and elaborates on how you can imbibe them in your behavior. Old habits a re difficult to break, but with these steps in the book, you will learn to pay attention to your instincts and push yourself into action.
