Paulo Coehlo always wanted to be a writer. A son of an engineer, this career choice and his rebellious behavior resulted in a trip to a mental institution on insistence of his parents. After various escape attempts and electroshock therapy, he was released at the age of twenty. His initial writings did not make a big splash, but he kept at it. After his pilgrimage to Camino de Santiago, he wrote The Pilgrimage, and later The Alchemist, that got a lot of attention.

I read this book many years back. At the time, you could say, I was in search of the promised treasure. More of a Self-Help category book, The Alchemist tells a story of and Andalusian boy who has a recurring dream of a buried treasure in Egypt and takes it as his destiny to travel to Egypt and claim the treasure. On his way, he meets many different characters and experiences different interactions and events. All of these reiterate the message that things will fall into place and you will get what you want, if you desire it bad enough.

The book explores the relationship of a married couple as Paulo Coelho compares partners to parallel tracks of railroad that are always together, but never become one.
